Few flowering plants in my Garden

As a botanist I thought it would be nice to know the name of the plants in my garden. Though I know the family to which they belong I dont know their scientific names, their uses or some of the important characters for all of them. It would be great to share this to others who love plants and would like to know them :)
Chrysanthemum indicum - Native to Asia & North eastern Europe

Scientific Nomenclature
Kingdom: Plantae
Order     :Asterales
Family    : Asteraceae
Tribe      : Anthemideae
Genus     :Chrysanthemum

Common Names
English : Chrysanthemum.
Hindi   : चंद्रमल्लिका Chandramallika
Tamil   : சாமந்தி Saamandi, ஜவந்தி Javandi
Description
It is an erect evergreen shrub with thick stems which grow from the base to 12 feet tall with equal spread. The hairy leaves are deeply lobed. Chrysanthemum is a genus of about 30 species of perennial flowering plants in the family Asteraceae, native to Asia and northeastern Europe. Amongst florists and in the floral industry, they are commonly referred to as "mums". The genus once included many more species, but was split several decades ago into several genera; the naming of the genera has been contentious, but a ruling of the International Code of Botanical Nomenclature in 1999 has resulted in the defining species of the genus being changed to Chrysanthemum indicum, thereby restoring the economically important florist's chrysanthemum to the genus Chrysanthemum
These species were, after the splitting of the genus but before the ICBN ruling, commonly treated under the genus name Dendranthema. The species of Chrysanthemum are herbaceous perennial plants growing to 50-150 cm tall, with deeply lobed leaves and large flowerheads. They belong to the Sunflower family, Compositae. Their blooms come in a huge variety of shapes and sizes.
The flowers are followed by decorative, chartreuse seed heads.
Habit: Plant in full sun or semi-shade and water regularly.
Flower colours: white, yellow or pink in the wild species. Their flowers come in every color except blue.

Mussaenda erythrophylla

Scientific Nomenclature
Kingdom : Plantae
Order      : Gentianales
Family     : Rubiaceae
Tribe       : Mussaendeae
Genus      : Mussaenda
Species    : erythrophylla
Common Names
English : Ashanti Blood, Red Flag Bush, Red Mussaenda, Prophet’s Tears, Tropical Dogwood, Virgin Tree
Hindi   : Bedina
Tamil   : வெள்ளையிலை Vellaiyilai
Description
It is an evergreen shrub related to coffee trees and native to Asia. It may be a rather small shrub, or large to 30 feet, like a small tree. Commercial nurseries often train mussaenda to be tree-like in form for landscape use. Their natural habit is to produce many stems and it is quite a rambler. It has silky, hairy, soft medium-green leaves. The plant's color comes from bracts and not the small, often yellow, white or orange, flowers at the center of each bract. This is the same color-producing system used by tropicals such heliconia and bougainvillea. Bracts may be seen in several colors including rose, white, red, pale pink and some mixtures.
Flowers: Each flower is composed of a small creamish white corolla that is five-lobed (0.8 inch across), funnel-shaped with a crimson-red felt center and pubescent beneath, together with a single roundish-ovate and enlarged bright red sepal (bract) measuring 2-5 inches. It is these stunning blood red sepals that led it to be commonly named ‘Ashanti Blood’ or ‘Red Flag Bush’.
Flowering Time & Care: Mussaenda ‘Ashanti Blood’ loves hot and humid environment, so locate it where it can receive full sun to induce best flower color and continuous flowering. Prune after blooming to shape and get a bushier shrub with more branching, resulting in more flowers. It has a tendency to become straggly and leggy, so prune heavily which it can tolerate, if necessary. There are no known serious insect or disease problems but do watch for spider mites and whiteflies.

Night Blooming Plants

Cactus - Originated from Antilles, Mexico and Central America
www.kakteensammlung-holzheu.de

Kingdom    :  Plantae
Order         : Caryophyllales
Family       : Cactaceae
Subfamily : Cactoideae
Tribe          : Hylocereeae
Genus        : Selenicereus
Species : grandiflorus

The prefix "Seleni" in the botanical name refers to the moon, in allusion to the nocturnal blooms, which are very large and full bodied.

Common Name
English : Queen of night, Lunar flower
Tamil / Telugu : Brahma Kamalam

Plant Description:
Night blooming cereus is a climbing cactus with vining, cylindrical stems. Selenicereus grandiflorus is usually a “functional epiphyte”; meaning the plant can thrive either as an epiphyte or a terrestrial plant. An epiphyte is a plant that grows on another plant for mechanical structure but not for nutrients. The stems send out adventitious (refers to structures that develop in an unusual place) roots to clasp their support plants.
Selenicereus Grandiflorus has digitalis-like effects; it boosts the heart and opens the blood vessels. It also stimulates the movement-governing nerves in the spinal cord, and may have an anti-inflammatory effect on the skin.

Care
  1. The night blooming cereus needs to establish its roots before it can bloom. Frequent repotting makes this difficult, so try not to do it unless it's completely necessary.
  2. Over watering your cereus can rot the roots and kill your plant before you have chance to see the flowers bloom.
  3. Avoid fertilizing the cereus during fall and winter. The plant is more likely to bloom if its had a period of dormancy before the spring.
Orchid - Grows in New Britain

Bulbophyllum nocturnum

Kingdom  :  Plantae
Order       :  Asparagales
Family      : Orchidaceae
Subfamily : Cactoideae
Genus       :  Bulbophyllum
Species : nocturnum

Bulbophyllum nocturnum, which is the world's first known night-flowering orchid, which has been discovered near Papua New Guinea. Photograph: André Schuiteman/PA
The only orchid among the 25,000 species which only flowers at night was discovered on New Britain Island, Papua New Guinea.
The small night-flowering orchid has yellow-green sepals that unfurl to reveal tiny petals adorned with dangling, grayish, thick and thin appendages. The flower, which is 2cm wide, has no noticeable smell, though some nocturnal species can time the release of their scents to attract nighttime pollinating insects.
It was reported in Gaurdian News Paper

Genus     :  Oroxylum
Species   : indicum
Common Names
English : Indian Trumpet, Midnight horror, Broken bones plant

Plant description

It is a tree which can reach a height of 12 m (40 ft). The large leaf stalks wither and fall off the tree and collect near the base of the trunk, appearing to look like a pile of broken limb bones. Those long fruits curve downward and resemble the wings of a large bird or dangling sickles or swords in the night.
The seeds are round with papery wings
