Sempervivum - Native to Europe and North America
Scientific NomenclatureKingdom : Plantae
Order : Saxifragales
Family : Crassulaceae
Genus : Sempervivum
Species : has about 40 species
Description:
The name "Sempervivum" has its origin in the Latin Semper ("always") and vivus ("living"). Sempervivum
are called "always living" because this perennial plant keeps its
leaves in winter and is very resistant to difficult conditions of
growth.
Sempervivums are available in many forms and colours, green
through browns, yellow, orange, pink and red although they need to be
grown in full sun to fully exhibit the different colours. Out of full
sun many cultivars tend to end up as a similar green colour.
The genus Sempervivum is easy to recognize, but its species are
often not easy to identify. Even one single clone can look very
different under various growth conditions (modifications) or different times of the year. The most colourful time is generally from March till June. Most of them grow Sempervivum sp. not for their flower but their leaves colour.
